Résumé
This study examines the economic conditions in East Africa during the nineteenth century under Omani rule, with particular emphasis on the role of Zanzibar as a major economic and commercial center. The study highlights the key economic activities that flourished during this period, especially agriculture, which benefited from political stability, fertile lands, and the agricultural expertise introduced by Omani settlers. Special attention is given to clove cultivation, which became the cornerstone of Zanzibar’s economy and a major export commodity in global markets. The study also explores the expansion of trade networks that transformed Zanzibar into an international commercial hub connecting the East African interior with markets in Arabia, India, Europe, and the Americas. It discusses the principal trade routes, the role of Omani merchants in establishing inland trading centers, and the various commodities exchanged across the region. Furthermore, the research examines the monetary system and the efforts of Omani rulers to introduce local currency as a means of strengthening economic independence. The study concludes that Omani rule played a significant role in promoting economic development in East Africa through agricultural expansion, commercial growth, and the strengthening of regional and international trade networks, making Zanzibar one of the most important economic centers in the Indian Ocean during the nineteenth century.
