Prisoners Struggle During the Algerian War of Independence: Militant Activism in Barberousse Prison
Résumé
To maintain communication between the revolutionary leadership and imprisoned mujahideen during the Algerian War of Independence, the National Liberation Front (FLN) developed a structured system to infiltrate and organize French colonial prisons through internally managed committees led by carefully selected members. This study aims to analyze the functioning of this system and its role in sustaining revolutionary action and political education within prison spaces.
Focusing on mujahid Brahim Ramdane as a case study, the research highlights his contribution to organizing and educating prisoners in Barberousse Prison, chosen for its symbolic significance in the history of the Algerian Revolution and the national struggle. Methodologically, the study relies on oral testimonies and the mujahid’s personal diaries, obtained from his family. It argues that colonial prisons were effectively transformed into spaces of collective organization and ideological formation, reinforcing the continuity of the revolutionary movement.
